Did you know that “80% of what we perceive comes through our sense of sight?” This fact from the Medical Eye Center highlights the importance of our eyesight and why protecting our eyes is important when considering overall wellness. By maintaining eye health, we can reduce the possibility of eye-related diseases and vision loss. Not sure what you can do to keep your eyes healthy? Keep reading for eye care tips.

7 Eye Care Tips

  1. Wear protective eyewear. Protective eyewear can help keep your eyes from physical damage. It’s recommended to wear sunglasses while outside or in direct contact with UV rays. Sun exposure can damage your eyes and raise your risk of certain eye diseases, such as cataracts. Safety goggles are highly encouraged while working on certain home repairs.
  2. Maintain regular eye exams. Early detection is key when it comes to treatment of age-related eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. Yearly eye exams are encouraged for people of any age, but especially those that are 65 and older.
  3. Give your eyes a rest. Overworking your eyes, especially when looking at phone and computer screens, can cause a strain that is unhealthy for your eyesight. To reduce eyestrain, look away from the screen every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds.
  4. Wear glasses or contacts, if necessary. Should you need corrective eyewear, it’s important that you consistently wear them and that they are in the correct prescription. And, if you wear contacts, be sure to take proper precautions to prevent eye infections, such as regularly changing them and washing your hands before you put in or take out your contact lenses.
  5. Eat a healthy diet. Your diet impacts a variety of your body’s functions, including your eyesight. Your diet should be heavily focused on fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and low-fat dairy. For eyesight particularly, fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and tuna, can also help your eyes.
  6. Exercise regularly. Exercise helps support many of your body’s functions – even your eyesight. Exercise may help control high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes – all diseases that can lead to eye or vision problems.
  7. Know your family’s history. Understanding your family’s medical history can help you understand your risk of eye diseases that can be associated with genetic factors. These diseases include glaucoma and macular degeneration.
