8 Summer Activities for Seniors
July 8, 2024It’s summertime and — as they say — the livin’ is easy. That means it’s time to make the most of these warm, sunny days. We’re big fans of sitting on the porch or patio with a glass of lemonade and a good book. But we’re also fans of getting fresh air, moving our bodies, and socializing with friends. Keep reading to check out our list of eight summer activities for seniors.
Start the Day with a Stroll
Taking a walk is hardly a novel idea, but stay with us for a second. What if you make it a regular practice to head outside first thing each morning? It won’t be too hot yet, walking will become part of your morning routine, and you’ll be exposing your eyes to morning light, which emerging science shows is good for your brain and helps you sleep better at night. (Check out this YouTube video with Dr. Andrew Huberman for an explanation of why.) Just remember not to wear sunglasses, which prevent your eyes from taking in the full spectrum of light.
Pack a Picnic
Your picnic doesn’t have to be anything elaborate; simply grab a couple of sandwiches, water, and snacks. Unless you really want to go old school, ditch the blanket and either pick a spot with benches or picnic tables or bring portable chairs that are easy to pack and set up. And, while your picnic certainly doesn’t have to be elaborate, it can be. Check out this list of 23 super yummy foods by Delish to pack either for a picnic or a day at the beach. Our favorites are the Strawberry Shortcake Rice Krispies Treats, Watermelon Quinoa Salad, and Prosecco Grapes.
Play Pickleball
Over the last few years, pickleball has become increasingly popular among all ages, especially as one of the top activities for seniors. But what you may not know is how incredibly social the sport is. Unlike tennis, you’re only standing a few feet away from your opponents, which makes it easy to chat in between points. Even better, pickleball is very easy to pick up. You do, however, have to be careful as pickleball injuries are on the rise. Don’t let your competitive spirit push you further than your body wants to go. While pickleball can be lower impact and social, you lose those benefits if you’re jumping for overheads and trash-talking your opponents.
Fly a Kite
When was the last time you focused on the little joys of life, like flying a kite? This is one of the best activities for seniors to do with their grandkids. Because, the thing about flying a kite, is that little kids don’t really have the know-how or patience to be successful. Here’s a primer from the American Kitefliers Association if you need a refresher before heading out.
Start an Herb Garden
Growing an herb garden requires way less space than, say, growing tomatoes or zucchini and can even be started in containers, which lands it high on the list of summer activities for seniors with minimal outdoor space. But the real benefit is that you always have basil, mint, or rosemary on hand when you need it. That translates into fresh pesto, mojitos, and garlic rosemary roasted potatoes. You can even try bringing your pots in for the winter and setting them by a sunny window.
Bring Back Lawn Games
While cornhole, or bags as some may call it, is more popular than ever, other classic lawn games have fallen out of favor. Who remembers playing croquet with their grandparents? (Here’s a nice set if you’re interested.) Horseshoes and bocce ball also stand the test of time. Grandkids coming over? Get some sidewalk chalk and a ball and show them how hopscotch and four square are played.
Be a Beach Glass Bum
Yes, you’ll need a lake or ocean. But if you have one, beach glass hunting is a hobby that can quickly turn you into an aficionado. Still, you can’t just head to the beach any old time and expect success. According to Lake Erie Living magazine, it’s best to go after a storm when waves wash up new treasures. Early morning is also best as you want to beat other treasure hunters. Here are a few more tips from East Coast Mermaid.
Start a Summer Book Club
The thing about regular book clubs is that they can be quite a commitment. A summer-themed book club, in contrast, can meet just in June, July, and August. Choose summer-themed books and meet outside, serving refreshing cocktails or mocktails, as well as light appetizers or desserts. Here’s a list of summer-themed books by Goodreads to get you started.
