Questions to Ask When Moving with a Pet

Pets bring a variety of health benefits to our lives which is a substantial reason why we continue to make them parts of our families. Your pet is ingrained in your life, which means when you move into a senior living community, you want your furry friend to come with you. Many senior communities now welcome pets, so this shouldn’t be a substantial concern. However, you also want to make sure that it’s the right place for you and your pet. Here are a few questions you may want to ask the communities you’re considering when moving with pets.

Questions to ask a Senior Community when You’re Moving with Pets

  • Do you allow pets? This may seem like an obvious place to start, but you never want to make assumptions. While many communities do allow pets now, it doesn’t apply to every one.
  • Do you have any breed, size or temperament restrictions? Many communities are happy to allow small dogs or cats but aren’t as keen on larger breeds or ones that may attack another resident. They may also ask to assess your pet’s temperament prior to your move.
  • How many pets do you allow per resident? If you have a dog or cat, chances are you have multiple. Many of us choose to bring a second pet into our families for companionship for the first animal. While the community you’re considering may allow you to bring your furry friend, they may limit you to one pet.
  • What community spaces allow me to walk or play with my pet? If your pet has lived in a home with a spacious yard for them to run around in, they’re going to be used to having that space during the day. It could be difficult for them to get used to a confined space if the senior living community doesn’t have enough outside space.
  • Do you require a pet deposit or monthly fee? At many facilities, a pet deposit or fee is required alongside other deposits and fees. Be sure to ask about this so you can account for any additional costs in your budget.
  • What are the vaccination requirements for my pet? Many facilities will request proof of your pets’ vaccinations to make sure that they and the other pets on campus are safe. It may make for a speedier process if you have those documents ready.

Questions to Ask Yourself about Moving with Pets

  • Will my pet be okay staying indoors? If your pet already lives inside most of the time, this won’t be a problem. But if your furry friend spends much of its time enjoying the sunshine and grass under its paws, a move indoors could be a difficult transition for them.
  • Can I care for my pet by myself? If you’re considering moving to a senior living community, you may be doing so because of mounting health issues. Growing health complications can make caring for a pet more difficult, but not impossible. Be sure to weigh your future abilities when considering moving with pets into a senior community.
  • Will I be able to afford my pet as well as the cost of the community? While moving to a senior living community comes with great value, it may be difficult to keep up with the costs of caring for a pet as well. If you can add your pet’s monthly costs into your budget with no problem, then the two of you will be able to live many happy years in a senior living community!
